Soliloquy has long been used in dramas. Some of the greatest scenes in Shakespeare are built around this narrative element, for example, Macbeth observing that life is “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” But although it’s ancient, by no means is soliloquy obsolete. As we see in the contemporary short drama “Alma,” Mexican writer/director Elizabeth Marlo brilliantly employs soliloquy to reveal the mind and heart of a most unusual protagonist. Shot on an iPhone X, the movie was featured in the 2020 International Mobile Film Festival.
