MobileMovieMaking Magazine’s Holiday Video Contest challenged participants to make a short movie about any special day of the year.
After reviewing entries from seven countries, the jury decided that two entries would share the top prize of $250. These winners are Prakash Gandhi Natarajan of the U.S. and Varun Mehta of India, both of whom made mini-docs about Diwali, a popular holiday in India known as the “Festival of Lights.” The two filmmakers approached the subject in different ways, Natarajan relying on visuals and sounds, and Mehta combining visuals with narration.
Winner of the People’s Choice Award–determined by the number of comments received–was Dana Jufe of the U.S. for her “Christmas in Vienna.”
While familiar holidays predominated, several films focused on lesser-known events such as “World Toy Camera Day” and “National Trivia Day.” Entries, which you can see here, took a variety of forms including parody, music video, horror, and stop-motion animation.
Contestants relied on a wide variety of mobiles to shoot their movies: iPhone, Nokia, GoPro, LG, DJI Spark, Samsung, and Redmi Note. Several entries combined footage from smartphones and drones. Gear and apps used included a Fig Rig stabilizer, olloclip lenses, and Pinnacle Studio (for editing)
The magazine’s next contest will be announced this summer. To be notified about the subject matter and dates, subscribe to our newsletter on any page.
