Apocalyptic movies—such as “Blade Runner,” “Mad Max,” and “I am Legend”—typically take a couple of hours to deliver the bad news of our future. If you’re in a hurry, you might prefer the pacing of “Flora,” directed by Baptiste Jung & Oscar Gentin, who—in just 60 seconds—transport us to their dark vision of a coming climate catastrophe. The film dramatizes an astonishing discovery made by scientists in 2053.
“Flora” excels in a number of ways including its spare dialogue, the practical lighting, the costumes, and the surprise ending. While countless books, articles, and movies have dealt with climate change, in may take the kind of emotional punch found here to get people thinking seriously about the climate catastrophe that may be waiting for us just a few decades from now.
Not surprising, the film was chosen as a finalist in Mobile Film Festival’s Act Now on Climate Change competition.
Since 2005, the Mobile Film Festival discovers and promotes new talent thanks to an international competition open to filmmakers around the world. The festival’s motto is: 1 mobile – 1 minute – 1 film. For its 15th edition, participants have produced short films responding to the theme “ACT NOW on Climate Change.” Out of 800 submissions from 91 countries, 50 films were selected as finalists in competition.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking have picked “Flora” as a Mobile Movie of the Week.
Speaking of the future, MobileMovieMaking is running a no-entry-fee Instagram contest: “Preview 2020.” The challenge is to use a mobile device to shoot a movie—60 seconds or shorter—predicting something about the coming year. The topic can be personal or societal. Deadline is December 31. You can find all the rules by clicking the crystal ball in our home page slide show or by going here.
