Make that a very, very dark comedy. In fact, Joel Perlgut’s “Sad Sachs”—which took the top prize at the Smartfone Flick Fest 2019—is about as dark as a comedy can get…while still being hilarious. The director even gets laughs out of a neo-Nazi sequence that Lenny Bruce probably would have loved. At SF3, the nine-minute movie also took prizes for its screenplay, cinematography, and lead actors. Because the dialogue delivery is machine-gun fast, you might want to turn on subtitles…even if you speak Australian.
If you’re interested in trailers, the trailer for “Sad Sachs” is worth studying. In just 40 seconds, the filmmakers introduce all the key characters, the main action, and the politically incorrect material.
Based in Sydney, Australia, SF3 is one of the world’s leading festivals devoted to shooting movies using smartphones and other mobile devices. They’re currently open for submissions for the 2020 Festival.
