Road pictures have featured a wide variety of protagonists: the comedy duo of Hope & Crosby, the feminist fugitives Thelma & Louise, a team of astronauts on the way to Jupiter, and even sentient cars. In “Détour,” Michel Gondry adds a determined tricycle to the list. Apple funded the production in 2017 to show off the then state-of the-art iPhone 7. Gondry, best known for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” took the assignment seriously. He filled the film with all sorts of classical elements including time lapse, cinéma vérité, special effects, and an upbeat ending. Even back then, the phone was clearly up to handling the challenges any serious moviemaker would throw at it.
