Religion has been the subject of a great many movies since the earliest days of cinema. Some of these movies have celebrated religion, such as “Soldiers of the Cross” (1900), “Siddhartha,” and “Oh, God!” Others—such as “Elmer Gantry,” “The Seventh Seal,” and “The Last Temptation of Christ”—have taken critical positions, often generating controversy. In the second category is “Annisa,” a one-minute movie on religion and human rights. This mini-drama won the Grand Prize in the 2018 Mobile Film Festival. The director—first listed as anonymous— is now known to be Indonensian filmmaker Khozy Rizal. Rizal used his $20,000 prize to make “Makassar is a City for Football Fans,” which earned a spot in the Short Film section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking have chosen “Annisa” as the Mobile Movie of the Week.
