Spanish filmmaker David Muñoz has been making short films for the last 13 years, always mixing comedy, fantasy and sci-fi as in “”Captain Justice,” which won first prize in the 2014 Mobil Film Festival. The movie was shot on an iPhone 4 and a Sony Xperia.
Of the many elements in this complex short, perhaps the most interesting is the choice of the subway location, which delivers the message that it takes a lot to get the attention of contemporary human beings. Says David about shooting in the subway: ” I didn’t need permission. In Barcelona there’s a film festival called ‘Subtravelling’ created by the subway company where everybody could participate shooting 3 minute films with their cellphones. So during that dates at least, there’s no problem in shooting at the subway. The most unexpected thing that happen is that two security guys came after the metro driver alerted them that that was a strange man onboard. At first, when they saw the superhero, they were thinking that it could be somebody who was gonna do something crazy at the metro. But when they saw us shooting, they just started laughing.”
Using a crew of six, David completed the shooting in about four hours. The $40 budget, he explains, “was for creating the dress of Captain Justice and buying frankfurts and ticket rides for all the crew.”
David is in preproduction for his first feature, to be shot in August 2014.
