Luis Mendes is the founder of MiniMov, a blog devoted to all aspects of mobile moviemaking. Based in Brazil, Luis is also an accomplished filmmaker. We interviewed him about his recently completed skateboard mini-documentary “AntiZica.”
MMM: What does the term “AntiZica” mean?
Luis: AntiZica is a popular expression that means “against bad luck” and here is used to avoid bad things in your life by going on the streets with your skateboard and having fun doing some tricks with friends.
MMM: What motivated you to make a skateboard movie?
Luis: I’m a skateboarder myself, and some of my friends are the best skateboarders around here.
MMM: How long did the shoot take?
Luis: We spent an afternoon shooting some basic tricks just to show what’s possible to do with a mobile. This was our first skateboard video, and we’re planning to make it a sequence like a skate mag. AntiZica was just a sample of what is possible.
MMM: Can you tell us about the equipment?
Luis: I used my iPhone 5, because it’s where i have FilmicPro installed and because it enabled me to use my Olloclip fish-eye lens. I chose to edit on the iPad because the screen is larger. That made for more accurate editing it, and it made it easier to place the text.
MMM: What advice can you give the rest of us about shooting a mobile sports video?
Luis: Well, first the photography is very important. For example, when we shoot action sports, it’s essential for us to have a fish-eye lens because it makes it easier to keep the subject in the frame. Second, it’s important to talk with the athletes when you’re shooting so there’s better interaction between camera and subject. Finally about editing, make it as dynamic as you can. Short cuts and some B scenes will create a movement that will entertain your audience.
MMM: What led you into moviemaking?
Luis: It’s funny because my first experience with visuals was as a VJ and graphic designer. I began to work with graphic animation and video production. When I bought my first iPhone 4 and I discovered about Apps for video editing I decided to go deeper. Today what excites me most is the possibility to make everything on the mobile and explore the combination of apps from shooingt to editing, and adding special effects like slo-mo, tilt shift, stop motion and more! Mobile moviemaking is awesome!
