The Making of “Lake of the Pines”

“Lake of the Pines”–created by teen filmmakers Brady Shaw and Gavin Bomhoff was a runner-up in this year’s Memorable Places competition. The video, set on Lake of the Pines, California, captures the joys of wave boarding. In the following interview,  Brady takes us behind the scenes of their high-energy sport-and-travel documentary.

MMM: How did you develop your filmmaking skills?

Brady:  I’ve followed advice from mentors and role models who I look very highly upon.  I would also say that experimentation has been important. I’m a big fan of trying new things. Since  this video was made I have spent countless hours of Premier Pro and After Effects tuning my skills for the future.

MMM: How long did it take you to make the movie?

Brady: Gavin and I spent two days at Lake of The Pines shooting the movie and about three days editing it.

MMM: Were there any unexpected problems during the shoot?

Brady: Mounting the Go Pro onto the boards had some issues, which we solved using duct tape. That proves fancy equipment isn’t needed to make an amazing video. Of course, we weren’t able to solve every problem. For example,  iPhone footage has some shakiness that couldn’t be fixed by warp stabilizer.

MMM: So what did you do?

Brady: We decided to just live with it.

MMM: What do you like best about shooting with mobile devices?

When shooting on an IPhone and GoPro, it is amazing because of the ability to film at any time. A phone is so easy to film with and its camera is very impressive and can make an amazing video. Then the GoPro is capable of incredible shots without the worry of breaking equipment.

MMM: What advice do you have for novice mobile moviemakers.

Brady: Don’t compare yourself to others. I still do that today and when I see a video by Casey Neistat or any other incredible filmmaker, I feel bad about myself.  So in order to keep creating videos you need  to forget about other creators and focus on your own work.

MMM: How can our audience learn more about what you’re up to?

Brady: At my website—bradenshaw19.weebly.com—you can see all of my work and learn more about me as a person.
