Cinematographers are often advised: keep the camera still and let your subject bring the action. Doing it that way has obvious benefits, primarily clarity. But for the daring filmmaker, there’s another option: allowing the camera to move and even dance with the world. That’s the active camera approach taken by Cecil Mathew in “Old Delhi: Unexploring India.”
In this two two-minute iPhone travelogue the filmmaker uses just about every trick in the camera book. You’ll encounter rotation, slow motion, extreme close-ups, light flares, and frames within frames. Such visual variety might prove distracting. But thanks to careful editing, the film is —like early impressionist paintings—an eye opening treat.
