Moviemakers and writers are often warned: “Show, don’t tell.” But that advice overlooks the possibility of combining showing and telling. As evidence that the combo can be effective consider “We Are Special” directed by Chetan Tankaria. A finalist in the 2021 Moment Invitational Film Festival, this three-minute movie blends pictures and narration to remind us of the miracle of existence.
The Director on Making His First Movie
Here’s what Chetan Tankaria said about creating “We Are Special”:
- This being my first ever attempt at creating a film, it was definitely a new and enriching experience. I have a new appreciation for visual story telling and the craft of a filmmaker. So many things to consider during the process to deliver the end result.
- 4 Months in the making, countless hours of editing, days spent scrubbing through new and old footage to finally create a 3 minute film.
- Whether it’s good or bad doesn’t matter, simply the process of creating something the world has never seen before was enough satisfaction for me.
