Ben Aston’s RUSSIAN ROULETTE has taken the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Disposable Film Festival. In Aston’s 5-minute movie, a lonely London woman meets a cosmonaut in space for a chatroulette encounter. The film is funny, sad, romantic and insightful—all in the space of five minutes. There are stunning performances by the leads Bec Hill and Steward Lockwood, along with memorable micro-performances by a seemingly never ending stream of losers.
According to the filmmaker, RUSSIAN ROULETTE was made for less than 50 pounds. To see how it was done, here’s an informative behind-the-scenes video:
Earlier, Aston’s movie was an Official Selection at Sundance and the Winner of the Jury Prize at the Sundance London Competition.
If you’re unfamiliar with chatroulette in the real world, you can get up to speed at chatroulette.com. But don’t count on finding chatroulette partners as endearing as the protagonists in Aston’s film.
I watched that yesterday and wanted to write about it on my blog but couldn’t find out what camera it was shot on. DFF accepts dslr films too . Any ideas?

We learned after posting that it was not shot using a mobile. This confirms your point that DFF isn’t just for mobile-shot movies. We decided to leave it on the site because it has lessons mobile moviemakers can use. But we are also checking movies more closely now. Our focus is mobile moviemaking.
