Adebayo Okeowo is an African human rights lawyer and filmmaker. A couple of years ago we featured his heartbreaking “Not for Sale,” a one-minute public service announcement about the perils of human migration. Now, taking on a very different genre, the director gives us “Abuja: People & Places.” Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja is home to about six million people. Using a wide variety of cinematic techniques (some of which we discuss below), Mr. Okeowo captures the area’s stunning landscapes and amazing people.
Elements of a Creative Travelogue
The director uses a wide variety of techniques to celebrate the people and places of Abuja. A partial list includes drone shots, surprising close-ups, slow motion, rotating camera shots, a selfie, underwater photography, and beautiful lighting achieved by shooting at different times of the day. The creativity does not stop with the visuals. The audio track cleverly uses a radio clip as an introduction and ties all the elements together with the song “Baiana” by Barbatuques (CloZee remix)
The gear used was: Sony a6300, DJI Spark (for the aerial shots) and iPhone 8+ (for the underwater shots). On some occasions he used the Ronin SC gimbal for stabilization.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking have chosen “Abuja: People and Places” as the Mobile Movie of the week.
