Many of our recent featured movies relate to COVID. These works document the pandemic and demonstrate that a crisis can spark creativity. We expect to showcase more such films in the weeks ahead. But we’re ready for something completely different. If you are, take a look at Jamiel Laurence’s exuberant dance film “To the Sea.” Set on the west coast of Scotland, “To the Sea” was shot during a single day. The dancers are Henry Dowden and Aitor Arrieta. The music—”Higgs Bosom”— was written and performed by FINLAY from the album “Self & Others.” The film was commissioned by The Peter Darrell Trust.
About the director
Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Laurence is a choreographer for stage, screen, and events. You can learn more about him on his website, his YouTube channel, and on Instagram.
If “To the Sea” brightened your day, here’s another of his spectacular dance creations: “43 Dancers, One Staircase, One Take.” Commissioned by the BBC, the performance—shot with no cuts— took place in BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay building.
