A memorable mini-doc must have strong images. But as we learn in Robb Montgomery’s “El Tatio Geyers,” concise, carefully written text can add clarity and drama.
Montgomery, a celebrated mobile journalist and film teacher, illustrates four ways to use titles in this short travelogue:
- He titles the video: “El Tatio Geyers” (0:04)
- He identifies the location: “In the Andes” (0:13)
- He provides an interesting fact not conveyed by the video: “…80 active vents” (0:26)
- He specifies a key time: “The show starts before sunrise” (0:52)
There are plenty of other useful tips hiding in plain view in this video–for example, including a spectator. The mini-doc is definitely worth repeated viewings.
You can see more of Montgomery’s work at his YouTube channel, and follow him @videojournalist. This Berlin-based filmmaker offers many online lessons, for example, “10 types of smartphone video.”
Thanks for this and don’t forget to notice the hashtag text, too!
