Some of the best horror movies deal with familiar things. Examples from five classics are: a motel, a flock of birds, a midnight swim, a fly, and a chain saw. In each case, the filmmaker takes something we know and maybe even use and gives it a little twist. This brings us to “La Voix,” a delightful high-tech horror short directed by Benjamin Lapierre, once of the principals of the prolific Little Walk of Fame producing company. Lapierre didn’t just direct this iPhone flick. He stars it in, handled the cinematography, created the FVX, and edited the footage.
Cinematic aside: Little Walk of Fame is known for its cinematic virtuosity. Watch carefully as you’ll see that Lapierre opens this film with seven dazzling close-ups.
Behind the Scenes
If you wonder how one person working alone can make such a complex film—in just 48 hours!—the filmmaker provides a detailed “Making-Of” video. In it he covers lighting (including the lightning effect), the automatic camera tracking, and the visual trick that allowed him to play two parts within one shot. The making-of video has no subtitles. But even if you don’t understand French you’ll likely get a lot out of it.
After viewing “La Voix,” you might like to check out other short films that Lapierre and his partner Alexandre Gaudou have produced—all shot using iPhones. We’ve previously showcased: “Supreluminique,” “Comme des Loups” (“Like Wolves”), “Copier Coller” (“Copy and Print”), and “L’Entretien” (“The Interview”).
