“Back to nature” has a positive connotation. But as Michael Kellermeyer points out in “Frightful Forests,” there’s a dark side to the unbuilt world. Kellermeyer discusses 13 scary stories set in haunted woods. These include Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Bernard Capes’ “The Thing in the Forest,” and Ambrose Bierce’s “The Boarded Window.” To that list we add “Plague Doctor,” a two-and-a-half minute, iPhone-shot horror short directed by Alex Lem.
The movie’s monster wears a costume developed by healers/quacks centuries ago during the plague years. But the key prop—a smartphone— lets us know that this is a contemporary tale. If you’re planning a hike through the woods, consider yourself warned.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking have chosen “Plague Doctor” as the Mobile Movie of the Week.
