Can you name a film that has a body part in the title? Turns out that there are many. A few examples: “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Claire’s Knee,” “Faces,” “Adam’s Rib,” “Murmur of the Heart,” “The Bone Collector,” “Dangerous Minds,” “Happy Feet,” and “Jaws.” (That last one might be a cheat.) To the list we’ll add “Handy,” a horror short directed by UK filmmaker Ketan Kunj Majmudar. The director, who also stars in the film, provides some behind-the-scenes information (below).
Ketan Kunj Majmudar on The Making of “Handy”
“Handy” was shot on an old iPhone 6S+ with Filmic Pro using the LogV2 setting throughout the shoot. I also used Filmic Remote to help with solo set and lighting setups.
All the footage was colour graded using Davinci Resolve 16, it was also used to create the VFX sequences, fades, rotoscoping and chromakey effects.
The audio was shot on a separate iPhone 6 using a mini shotgun XLR mic, the AT-875R going through an iRig Pre preamp straight into the mini jack, recorded on an iOS app called Multitrack DAW. The audio and video were synced later in Davinci Resolve. This audio setup was also used for all Foley sound effects and the ADR of some dialogue.
The final sound mix was assembled in Reaper and then synced back to the final edit.
