Dance is an ancient art. But because its practitioners constantly innovate, dance is forever new. Filmmakers have long played a role in the development of this art. In 1894, for example, Thomas Edison filmed modern dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis performing her “Skirt Dance.” The decades that followed features a variety of memorable dances such as Fred Astaire, Shirley Temple, Ginger Rogers, and Gene Kelly. Carrying on that tradition, Brionne Olsen gives us “Elements of Movement.”
Brionne Olsen on the Making of “Elements of Motion”
I was selected participant for Zhiyun’s Creator Club contest where I received a Smooth 5s gimbal to make a short film under 3 mins. This fit in nicely with the theme “UP” for the SF3 Smartphone FlickFest in Sydney Australia. The great advantage of a Smartphone rig is to be able capture such complex shots with very little effort. I had the phone, the Anamorphic lens, the Gimbal and a Monopod and I used Filmic Pro and Filmic remote for monitoring on another device so I could frame my subjects appropriately.
Elements of Movement Dance Studio is an established studio that I approached and was keen to partner with me and within 3 days they had a routine ready.I was featured on the SBP Podcast with Susy Botello talking about how I made the film.
From start to finish, this took 3 weeks to make from talent search, to recording and finally editing and publishing.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking have chosen “Elements of Movement” as the Mobile Movie of the Week.
