One of the first questions we ask about a movie is: “What’s the genre?” We know that a comedy will be different from a horror flick or a thriller. The categorization seems simple. But in reality, many movies—especially those that are memorable—blend two or more genres. They’re like alloys that combine metallic elements in order to achieve strength. Two celebrated mixed-genre films are “The Godfather” (crime + family drama) and “King Kong” (horror + romance). For a contemporary example of genre blending consider “Feel the Way I Want” directed by and starring Caroline Rose. Take a look and see how many genres this movie—shot on an iPhone 11 Pro— draws upon. You’ll find our observations below.
“Feel the Way I Want” Genres
Identifying a movie’s genres is a bit like taking a Rorschach test. That’s a roundabout way of saying your list might differ from ours.
For starters, “Feel the Way I Want” is a music video. Somewhat oddly, while it features the singer, her onscreen performance is dancing rather than singing. But the song plays, and the video promotes it, so it definitely qualifies as a music video.
The film is also a comedy, which arises from the protagonist thinking her audition is in Hollywood, California, whereas it’s really in Hollywood, Florida. (There are 24 Hollywoods in the U.S., 2 in Ireland, and one each in Turkey, Singapore, Russian Federation and Philippines.)
Finally, this is a road pic. Our heroine visits Las Vegas; the Cadillac Ranch on Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas; Monument Valley National Park; and New Orleans.
If you discover different genres, we hope you’ll share your views in the comment section below.
