Yung Nguyen’s “Mustard” has won the top prize in the Shakespeare on Smartphone competition sponsored by Intermission Youth Theatre. Each entry was inspired by a line from a Shakespearean play. Nguyen’s film deals with the importance of perseverance in a period of desperation. The five-minute movie cleverly suggests the passing of time with shots of an increasingly empty kitchen cabinet. In addition to handling many production jobs, the director plays the protagonist, sharing top billing with a determined mustard plant.

Intermission Youth Theatre is a London-based nonprofit that uses the arts to nurture creativity in young people living in difficult circumstances. The project’s home is St Saviour’s, a theatre church in the heart of Knightsbridge, London. The church was established by Bishop Rob and Janine Gillion as a safe, reflective and creative space for arts.
The ten participants in the smartphone film project were trained by Cassius Rayner, a UK mobile moviemaker and founder of GoFilmIt. Recently, this magazine chose Rayner’s “London Falls Silent” as the 2020 Mobile Movie of the Year.
