“The Painter of Jalousie”: a mini-doc about the power of color

“The Painter of Jalousie” tells the story of Duval, a Haitian artist Duval with a big dream. Duval believes that adding color to slum dwellings will make the community more joyful.

In just under 6 minutes, the movie introduces us to Duval, captures his vision, and shows him involving Haitians—including children—in turning an idea into reality.

“The Painter of Jalousie” is the work of Los Angeles filmmakers David Darg and Bryn Mooser, cofounders of RYOT. Their organization produces documentaries aimed at changing the world. According to Darg and Mooser, their movie is the first 4K movie produced using the iPhone 6s.

They also created a behind-the-scenes short on the making of “The Painter of Jalousie.”

If you’re inspired to shoot your own mini-doc, we’re currently running a no-entry-fee contest. You can find out about it here.

This film is just wonderful. I love the dream and the enthusiasm of it all. I want to be there and paint, and I totally believe that it will and does transform the hill and therefore the attitudes of the people. The film reminded me of something that I forgot; color does indeed make people happy!

Of course, here you’d need a permit, a contracted painter, you wouldn’t be able to share with children (might hurt them or impact them in a negative way, or at minimum, cancel your insurance – which you will need for this), approved paint, and probably permission (or pay fees to) the neighborhood HOA. But considering it’s not bound by all sorts of local and federal government restrictions, how wonderful for Jalouzi! And, all sarcasm aside, God bless Duval.
