We’ve categorized James Grifffiths “Splitscreen”—shot entirely on the Nokia N8—as “experimental” because it still is a novelty with mobile moviemaking.
Of course, in the overall history of moviemaking, splitscreen is not new. According to Wikipedia, the technique was pioneered more than a century ago by Lois Web, as exemplied in this frame from “Suspense” (1913).
A number of Hollywood movies such as “Pillow Talk” and “Airport” popularized the technique in the 1960s and 1970s.
Now, as in the past, there really is just one big question regarding split screen: Does it enrich the story?
“Splitscreen – A Love Story” was a winner in the Nokia Shorts Competition 2011. You can find more of James’ work at vimeo.com/jameswgriffiths.
