Escapism often has a negative connotation. But during COVID confinement, getting away from things can lift one’s spirits. The music video “Modais” is a case in point. Using imaginative stop-motion animation, Brazilian filmmaker Nícolas de Sousa presents a variety of activities for combatting cabin fever. There’s sailing, railroading, bicycling, and—most important—reading. And there’s also the transportive music of Silvio Filgueira. De Sousa shot the four-minute movie on an iPhone 8 Plus using the FiLMiC Pro app. To learn more about de Sousa’s vision, see his notes below.
Nícolas de Sousa Talks About His Stop-Motion Music Video
“This project was conceived, shot, and edited in its entirety during the covid-19 pandemic. The song and video talk about the ability of art & culture to transport us to different worlds, without physically leaving our actual place. Just reach out to a book or movie and you’ll be transported. This is something very appropriate given the current pandemic crisis that the whole world is facing. For the greater good, we stay at our homes, reconnecting to one another and the outside world through music, film, and literature.”
