“Don’t Mess with Mother” is a public service announcement (PSA) for Earth Day. Sponsored by Apple, the video was shot in various places around the world by members of the Camp4 Collective. The variety of animal cameos sends a strong message: our treatment of the environment isn’t just about us.
But this one-minute movie serves another purpose. It provides additional evidence that modern smartphones—in this case, iPhone XS—can produce amazing images in all sorts of settings, including under water. Once again we learn: If you can get there, you can capture it with a smartphone.
There’s much to learn from the master filmmakers. Upon a second view, note the use of close-ups, the quick cutting, the editing to music, and the moving camera.
Resources used in the production included Beastgrip Pro, the Movi Freefly Gimbal, Moment Lenses and FiLMiC Pro.
While the public service announcement genre may not get the coverage of a Hollywood comic-book feature, in about a week, “Don’t Mess with Mother” racked up more than 18 million views on YouTube.
The producers also created a making-of video, shot for some reason in the vertical orientation. Whether or not you go for that look, this behind-the-scenes video is spectacular—allowing us to hear the voices of some of the filmmakers. There are astonishing sequences in which animals get their jaws and hands on the phone.
Camp4 Collective describes itself this way: “We make films, commercials, and other motion picture goodness.” You can learn more about this group of creatives on Instagram, Vimeo, and YouTube.
The editors of MobileMovieMaking Magazine have chosen “Don’t Mess with Mother” as a Mobile Movie of the Week.
