Using an iPhone to shoot crucial scenes in a feature film

TANGERINE established the fact that you can shoot a whole feature film with an iPhone. So it might not seem big news that while shooting MISS YOU ALREADY celebrated director Catherine Hardwicke used her smartphone to capture just a few scenes. But Hardwicke’s rationale for using the phone  illuminates a significant benefit of shooting with a mobile.

In an IndieWire interview, Hardwicke explains that to create a sense of intimacy, she needed to get especially close to the performers. The iPhone’s small size enabled her to achieve closeness without interfering the actors. In her words: “ I was showing the DP [director of photography] how I wanted to film it and there’s two scenes that I shot with my iPhone 5 that are in the movie. Recorded the sound on it, and they’re in the film. Nobody really notices it.”
