Lucy Langlas has won first place in MMM’s Travel Video Contest. Her “Venice Beach —Holy Roller Child” follows a young California woman on a day-trip from Culver City to Venice Beach, a destination that Langlas says “has a unique combination of grime and beauty. The prize is a set of olloclip lenses.
Drawing upon her musical background Langlas created a hybrid travelogue/music video. Her song “Holy Roller Child” serves as the soundtrack.
The filmmaker spent hours riding a bus to find locations that would allow her to capture the images she had in her head. The iPhone shoot took an afternoon. Editing was done using Videohance.
The guest judge for the competition was Susy Botello, founder of the International Mobile Film Festival. Botello commented that determining the winner was difficult because there were so many entertaining entries. Filmmakers represented in the competition came from 11 countries.
About “Venice Beach” she wrote: “The filmmaker did an excellent job in developing a story that evokes warmth and peacefulness. Its message is that just a little wandering can settle the mind.”
Botello chose “Bounce, a soccer ball odyssey” as the second place winner. She noted its “brilliant use of edits and cinematography.”
The Magazine’s editors, agreeing with Botello that there were many excellent submissions, identified eight “Staff Picks.” In alphabetical order these are:
- Camden Town
- East Coast vs. West Coast
- History Lesson
- Lisbon. Live
- My SelFeet
- Prague in a Minute
- Travelling
